Website news
First off, some news about this website. I have neglect rewindcoding.dev over the past few months and I plan to address the situation, starting with giving you some news. My plan is to upload all my remaining FF6 romhacks available online as well as my remaining ff6hacking wiki tutorials, at a pace of at least one or two entries a month. Also, my FF6 romhacks can now be found on RHDI, a brand new romhacking website run by former RHDN staff.
Habit changes
One reason I stepped away from website updates recently is that I spent a lot of time switching my browser, email client, operating system, applications, mobile operating system to alternatives that focus more on privacy and security as well as being open-source if possible. This idea was suggested by a friend who asked me why I was gifting all my data to corporations such as Google and Microsoft, and why I wasn't adopting better alternatives given that I have a degree in computer sciences.
He had a very good point. The process is slow and I'm still going through it but a lot has been done. Privacy guides are a good starting point and have good recommendations about which software and OS to use. They also have a Youtube channel. I have ditched Windows, and I'm also learning more about my new OS, which, while being a Linux distro, is not as intimidating as I would have expected. I can say after a few weeks of regular use that I don't miss Windows and the alternatives I use to rebuild my digital ecosystem are working very well!
With the increasing influence of FAANG-like corporations on our online life, anyone who has a cellphone or a computer can tend toward diminishing this influence, even if in the end it's not in totality. The trick is to do one change at a time, informing yourself first then getting used to your new tool before making te next change. Some things can be done easily, like ditching the Chrome browser for an open-source browser that respect privacy such as Brave.
Nobody should fear making a similar switch!
